Sukie's Culinary Canvas: A Gastronomic Expedition with Applied Learning

Join us as we delve into the delectable journey of Sukie, an eighth-grade culinary artist whose exploration of the culinary arts has been a feast for the senses.

Sukie's culinary odyssey commenced in sixth grade when she embarked on a journey of immersion into the Applied Learning way. You see, applied learning is not just one skill or one class, but it is an entire mindset that our school operates through. During her 6th grade year, teachers created small scaffolded projects through which students got a deep understanding of the 6 pillars of applied learning: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, civic advocacy, habits of work, and research. Once she was able to have this year of training, she was prepared for the following year where she could choose a different focus for her applied learning projects.

Her 7th grade journey through Textile Arts saw her discovering the intricate art of crocheting. Under the guidance of her teachers, she honed her skills in patience, precision, and creativity, laying the groundwork for her future culinary endeavors.

In seventh grade, Sukie's passion for the culinary arts blossomed as she transitioned into Culinary Arts Advisory classes. From mastering the art of mise en place to experimenting with diverse flavor profiles, she embraced the kitchen as her canvas. Field trips played a crucial role in her culinary education. Visits to high school culinary programs and cultural festivals provided her with firsthand insights into the rich tapestry of culinary traditions, sparking her curiosity and igniting her creativity.

One of the highlights of her culinary advisory was the series of enriching field trips. The Asian Lunar New Year celebrations introduced her to a variety of traditional dishes, allowing her to taste and learn about the food she later tried cooking herself. The Greek Festival was another vibrant experience, where she immersed herself in Greek culinary traditions, expanding her palate and culinary repertoire. Additionally, a visit to Central Market exposed her to a diverse range of ingredients and cooking techniques, further fueling her passion for the culinary arts.

Throughout her middle school journey, Sukie's culinary prowess shone brightly. She submitted her culinary creations into competitions, delighting staff judges with her innovative dishes. In-person cooking demonstrations became her stage, where she showcased her skills with finesse and flair.

Now, as Sukie stands on the cusp of high school, she prepares to take her culinary journey to new heights. Armed with a live demonstration of her pasta-making skills and a wealth of culinary knowledge, she is ready to showcase her talent at a more extensive culinary program.

Sukie's artifact—a live cooking demonstration coupled with a Q&A session—is a testament to her growth, passion, and dedication to the culinary arts. It reflects the applied learning principles she has embraced throughout her middle school years: teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

As Sukie transitions to the next chapter of her culinary adventure, one thing is certain: her journey through Applied Learning Academy has equipped her not only with culinary skills but also with the confidence, creativity, and resilience to thrive in the kitchen and beyond.
